New Chevington Cheese
Available again after an absence of 105 years! A cheese of delightful contradictions which is pure palate indulgence.

New Chevington is a semi soft mould ripened cheese made with rich Jersey milk which has been revived, as near as possible to the original recipe, by artisan cheesemaker Mark Robertson of Northumberland Cheese Farm, Blagdon.

A cheese that delighted North East palates well over a century ago and then disappeared into obscurity has been revived by one of the region's leading cheesernakers.

Just a few years after being introduced to the market in the 1880' s the death of the original cheesemaker meant production ceased. However following some patient
detective work by Mark Robertson, who runs Northumberland Cheese, a description of the original recipe was tracked down at the Northumberland Records Office.

Now with only one or two variations, necessary to comply with modern standards of cheese making. New Chevington is available again! Made with rich Jersey cows' milk from Wheelbirks dairy farm at Stocksfield, Mark describes the mould-ripened New Chevington as a: "cheese of delightful contradictions." He explains that the smooth texture of the cheese suggests a slightly less acidic taste than is actually
the case. "The taste and texture contradirt each other, which makes the cheese very unusual but delirious."

During his researches Mark found a reference to Chevington cheese in an article from a Northumberland newspaper of 1885. The author commented that Mr John W Annett: "Has succeeded in putting on the market a tasty, nutritious and wholesome article. Its quality is unimpeachable. It is made from the best new milk, and perfect cleanliness and every care is observed in its production. It beats the foreigner. That much goes without saying. It is not the strong acrid taste of the foreign article, but is mellow and appetising."

The Northumberland Cheese Company has won numerous national awards for the quality of its wide range of existing cheeses, including a gold and a first prize. Mark would be pleased to receive comments from those who try New Chevington, either in person at The Cheese Farm or via this website.
